Austin - Lots Of Traffic

We ended up spending more time in Austin than we planned. Our plan was for Dad to take his test and for the folks to visit LBJ Museum. We wanted to then head to Dallas, but the snowy weather there kept us in Austin. The folks were able to visit the LBJ Ranch which they totally enjoyed.

The campground we stayed in was convenient as it was right off the highway, but the traffic was terrible.  Houston, Dallas and Austin all have heavy traffic.  Mom still doesn't like the feeder roads in Texas.  An example is this campground.  You have to double back on a feeder road to get to it.  All the sites were pull-thrus.  It looks like it used to be a KOA.

One of the couples that works in the office at this campground loves greyhounds.  They invited us into the office to get some loving.

Here are some photos of the campground:

Here we are leaving Austin.  The traffic is heavy.  Mom said it was worse on Sunday night.  They had a heck of a time just getting out of the campground.
Our trip to Dallas was uneventful until we stopped to get gas.  We normally go to the truck area, but there was a long line.  We decided to use the RV fuel lines.  We were waiting behind an RV that was trying to get propone. The RV discovered they needed to turn around to get their propane filled.  While they were turning around, a tractor trailer decided he was going to get in front of us.  It took him forever to fill up because the RV pumps do not fill fast like the truck pumps do.  So, we had to wait.  Well, in the meantime, the RV wanting to fill up couldn't get to the propane because of the tractor trailer.  We all had to wait.  The attendant asked us to back up.  Dad told him we couldn't with the car attached. When the tractor trailer finished, Dad went through the lane to get out of the way of the RV because he needed to get to the propane tank which is where we were and our rig would block him if we got gas.  Well, the RV couldn't make the turn with his car attached, so he ended up having to unhook his car.  He was not happy.  Mom decided to run across to Burger King and get us some lunch while this was going on.  Finally, the RV got out of our way and we filled our tank.  Luckily, we were not in a hurry because this stop took us 45 minutes.

This truck full of cattle were in front of us at the gas station. They started backing up and Dad had to blow our air horns to let them know we were there.

As we pulled out of the gas station, Dad ran up on the curb.  Our kitchen cabinet flew open and our plates and bowls spilled out.  Our printer flew off the cabinet in the bedroom.  It was a mess.

We finally arrived in Dallas.  Actually, we are to the South of Fort Worth.  We have had terrible weather since we arrived last Thursday.  We have had ice, snow, cold, wind, heavy rain and another bout of snow last night. Mom has been sick with a cold. We have not had fun while here.  Our plan was to buy a new RV, but the weather has played havoc on our plans.  We should be in it right now, but the darn weather delayed things.  As it stands right now, we are going to miss Escapade in AZ.  Yep, all of our plans have changed.  Anyway, we are supposed to move in on Monday.  Will it happen?  Stay tuned!

A Day In Gettysburg

Dad was off from work for three days!  We had a great time. We slept late every morning.  Mom had to wake us up this morning.  We heard the alarm go off at 5:10 a.m., but we ignored it.  We really wish Dad didn't have to go to work today.

Sunday, the folks drove to Gettysburg.  Mom has wanted to go there for a long time. She would really like to attend the event, Greyhounds In Gettysburg, but it hasn't worked out with our schedule yet.

They ate at a restaurant that used to be a house.  Construction began on the home in 1774 and the family moved into the house in 1776.  The family had ten children and then the wife died.  The husband remarried and the new wife had nine children.  There were 19 children living in that house.  Yikes!

Dobbin House - this is the restaurant.
The folks had lunch in the tavern which is in the basement.  Each table had a candle on it.  The lighting basically was by candle.  It was pretty dark inside.

The bar was made in 1880.

This is the candle at their table.  The walls were made of stone.
Mom enjoyed the atmosphere more than the food.  She had a hamburger with a sharp cheese because that is the only cheese they offered and she didn't like the cheese. Dad had crab cakes.  He said they were good.

After they ate lunch, they went to the Gettysburg visitors center.  They saw a movie about Gettysburg and toured the museum.  Mom had planned on purchasing an audio tour of the battlefields, but they only had about two hours for the tour and she felt they didn't have enough time for the audio tour.  They both regretted not buying it and Dad said they may go back again and buy it so that they can take a proper tour of the battlegrounds.

Mom said that Gettysburg was different than she expected.  She thought it would mainly be open fields, but there are a lot of memorials.

This is Cemetery Hill where a lot of fighting took place.

See the brick building in the back?  That is the entrance to the cemetery where many of the soldiers are buried. Abe Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address there.  That brick entrance was there during the war.

A little better picture of the entrance to the cemetery.

The folks enjoyed their visit to Gettysburg.  The drive was pretty with the fall colors.

Oh, Mom said she saw a greyhound there.  She didn't get to say "hi" because he was walking with this family down the street.  Dad isn't really a greyhound stalker, so they didn't stop.

Greyhounds And Amelia?

Saturday afternoon, the folks drove to Atchison, KS to visit Amelia Earhart's Birthplace Museum.  As soon as they pulled up, Mama got excited at what she saw.

Do you see what Mama got excited about?

I bet this helps.

Yep, there are two greyhound statues outside the home.

When they entered the house, Mama asked if there was connection between Amelia and greyhounds.  Apparently, there is not.  :-(   It appears that someone just donated them to the house.

The folks paid their $5 for the tour.  The price has gone up from the price on the website that Mama posted above. The tour guide gave them a sheet of paper describing the house and sent them on their way for the self-guided tour.  Dad said for $5, she could have given them a tour.  BOL!

The house actually belonged to Amelia's grandparents.  It is the house where she was born and lived until she was about nine.  Her father lived in Kansas City, but traveled a lot, so she lived there with her mother and sister.

The dining room is filled with items from movies telling the story of Amelia.

The clothing was worn by Hilary Swank.

Mama said there was way too much to see in the museum.  There was a lot to read.  It was interesting.  She would have liked it more if Amelia was a fan of greyhounds.  BOL!

How Much Can A Squirrel Put In Its' Mouth?

Mama noticed that our new garden flag had holes in it a few weeks ago.  She couldn't believe it since it was almost brand new.  She couldn't figure out how it had happened.  Dad and I figured it out.

We were sitting outside and this squirrel climbed on top of the flag holder.  He then proceeded to put almost the entire flag in his mouth and then he climbed down and was hanging by the flag that was in his mouth.  Can you believe that?  Dad tried to get a picture but the squirrel got startled and left.

People are always telling Scout that she is BEAUTIFUL.  I think they should see her the way I do.  BOL!  She is actually sleeping here.
