Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum

Wow!  We haven't posted in a while.  Grandma even contacted us last week to see if we were okay. (Hi Grandma!)   Not much is really going on.  Mom and I have been enjoying the nice weather and sometimes we sit outside for two or three hours.  She reads and I sleep.  Mom and I patrol the campground several times a day.  Doug, who works here, enjoys talking to me, so I make sure I see him as often as possible.  The owner also likes to pet me, so I make sure he sees me. Mom is still working when she wants or rides Buddy aka shopping. Mom has been busy purging things but still has more cabinets to go through. She got out all her winter clothes last week and washed them.  My bed even got washed.  I was not happy.  So, we are not just sitting around watching TV.  BOL!
Here I am in front of the buggy that is at the campground.  I refused to pose for the photo.

Can you believe that people still go out the wrong way.  If the owner sees you doing it, she will yell at you.  BOL!

The chicks from the neighboring farm seem to think the campground is theirs.
People laugh at my boot, but look at this horse we saw on TV!  He wears four boots.  He visits nursing homes.

We had a small Casita rally here last week.  They are really small trailers.
Last Saturday, Dad took his no line bi-focals back.  He just can't adjust.  He said he could only see a small circle on his computer.  The lady at the eye place said that some people just can't wear them.

Last Sunday, the folks visited Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.  It is a place that is dedicated to the Pennsylvania Germans that settled here.  Some of the buildings are original to the site and others were moved there.  Supposedly, it looks like it did when it was a town in the 1700's.  Two brothers actually started the museum because they were big collectors and they wanted to display their items.  They opened their museum in 1925.

The farm consists of some houses, blacksmith shop, farm and machinery and tool barn, hotel, school house, store, firehouse, tin shop, tavern, gun shop and a log cabin.  The folks have visited many old farms and a few villages like this, but the thing that made this one different was that their were people there showing how things were done.  Mom really enjoyed the tin shop.  The lady there has made the items in the shop such as candle holders, pitchers, etc. She also makes and sells Christmas ornaments.  Her ornaments were on the White House Christmas Tree one year.  The man in the gun shop showed how guns were made from start to finish.  Mom is not all that interested in guns, but it was still interesting to see.  The man in the tavern didn't have too much to say but he was tired because he was doing yard work before the folks arrived. The visitors center was full of weather vanes, but no photos were allowed.

The folks enjoyed the tour more than they thought they would.  The cost was $12 a person, but Mom had a free ticket through her KOA app.  KOA now offers coupons as part of their membership which is pretty neat.  The coupons are for all over the country and the folks have used several at restaurants, attractions and even Great Clips.

This weekend, they did a little shopping.  They went to an ice cream place that is famous here, Lapp Valley Farm. They make their own ice cream and the waffle cones are made fresh.  Mom said it was really good. The cars were lined up because there was not enough parking and that was on a rainy afternoon. The folks ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel and ate at a few buffets.  I didn't get to go anywhere because the wind was really high and I don't enjoy walking in high winds.  I don't even like sitting outside in high winds.  It is still windy today, but tomorrow should be better.

A Quick Review Of Our Coast To Coast Trip - Part 1

We left Freeland, MD on Sunday, September 20th.  We stayed at Merry Meadows.  We never fell in love with the place.  We thought it was quite boring. There was not much activity where we were parked.  Most of the people were not friendly.  I guess we will always remember it as the place that Scout died.  :-(   I also had to have that surgery on my mouth, so not the best memories.  Mom did enjoy visiting Pennsylvania.  They went to Lancaster three times and Gettysburg three times.

Sunday night, we stayed at the KOA in Dayton.  This was a really nice KOA.  The turns to get into our site were not easy, but the park was really clean and nice.  We could see ourselves staying there on a long-term basis.

Nice fenced dog area - no agility stuff getting in my way.

Large ponds

Chipmunk
The next night we were back in Missouri!  We stayed at the same campground we stayed at in July and we even stayed at the same site.  Mom was a little sad that Scout wasn't there since she was there last time.  Grandpa and Grandma L came over to visit.  Grandpa had been sick the last time we were home, so I didn't get to see him then.  However, they sat on my couch and didn't move when I asked them to, so I just squeezed my way onto the couch and they had to share with me.  As soon as they left, I took my regular spot and slept.

Life as it should be.
Wednesday, we headed out on the road again.  We spent the night at another KOA.  This one was outside of Oklahoma City.  It was not as nice as the one in Dayton.  There was a pit bull that was chained up outside a fifth wheel that was not friendly.  We avoided him.  Dogs are not supposed to be left unattended, but he was out all night.  It was easy off and on the highway, so it was all we needed for one night.

Thursday, we drove through Amarillo, TX.  The last time we were there, we had so much fun. Remember when we visited Cadillac Ranch?  Mom was sad as we passed through the area remembering our last visit.

Us leaving our mark on Cadillac Ranch.

We stopped in Albuquerque, NM. We stayed at the American RV Park for two nights.  It was a really nice park.

The dog park had rubber mulch.

See the burger on the billboard? The folks ate at 66 Pit Stop.
In Albuquerque, NM you are asked red or green. They are not talking about Christmas. They are talking chili.  The laguna burger has green chili.  Mom said it was HOT.  She felt it for two days.  Dad said he was surprised that it was that hot.

The folks took a trolley tour in Albuquerque, but we will save that and the rest of our trip for our next post.

Smuckers

The campground really comes to life on the weekends.  During the week, we have full-timers who pull in for a night or two. They are quiet.  The weekends bring families with kids and dogs. The full-timers have dogs, but they seem quieter for some reason.  This weekend has to be the most dogs we have seen.  There is one family with six small dogs....six yappy dogs.  There are several people with poodles.  The worse is a family with two beagles. Their bark is more of a scream.  It sounds like someone is trying to kill them. It's really bad at 6 a.m. when they bark at us.  This morning, they saw us and started their screaming.  I started whining and then we heard coyotes barking.  Mama was scared we would start rooing.  That would not be good at 6 a.m.  Mama is always happy when the park clears out during the week and we can walk around without having dogs bark at us at every corner.

Yesterday, Scout and I were in the dog park and Scout decided to run.  Well, I decided it looked like fun.  Mama was trying to get us to stop, but she couldn't yell at us because it was 6 a.m.   It was so much fun.  We haven't had a run since we left home.  Mama is scared we will get hurt, but we have to be dogs, don't you think?  Later, we took a walk and we were so good according to Mama.  We just walked along without pulling or having to be pulled. Maybe the run did us good. We walked past this one trailer and a guy yelled "THERE IS A LADY WALKING TWO GREYHOUNDS, COME QUICK!"  LOL

The folks visited the Smuckers store and museum today. Smuckers makes jams, jellies and ice cream toppings. They own several companies such as Hungry Jack, Pillsbury, Crisco, Dunkin Donuts, Jif, Flogers, Eagle Brand, Knotts Berry Farm, Martha White and others.  You can see all their brands here.  The folks planned on eating at their cafe. Mama tried to find reviews on it, but nothing came up.  It turns out that it is not much of a cafe. They basically serve pizza.  They really should think of opening up a real cafe there.  They could serve homemade biscuits with all their jams and jellies. They have enough brands that they could make just about anything.  They really are missing out by not doing that according to Mama.

Leaving Smuckers
Mama said it was fun visiting the store. The musuem wasn't real exciting or big, but it showed the history of Smuckers and that was interesting.  They did buy a few things. Mama saw some ice cream toppings that she just had to have.  One is pecan in syrup. She has not seen that in the store, but she doesn't normally look at ice cream toppings, so it might be quite common.  We need ice cream to try them out. Dad bought some peanut butter.

Since they decided not to eat in the cafe, they had to find another place for lunch. They were in Amish country, so they chose an Amish restaurant.  It was a little pricey, so they chose to just have sandwiches instead of a full meal or the buffet. They were not impressed at all, but it's probably because they ordered hamburgers at an Amish restaurant. It is probably not their speciality. LOL

The Amish restaurant had a gift shop and Mama was tickled because they had greyhound items.
A sign for our RV.

A notepad
I don't know why they think greyhounds look like Scout, but apparently they do.

The folks went out to dinner, but our post is getting long, so we will talk about that tomorrow.

Another Cool And Rainy Day

Yesterday, we took several walks. We sometimes drop Scout off when she gets tired and she missed out meeting an older couple that gave me treats. They live here in the summer and then they go to Florida for the rest of the year. They are really nice. Everyone but that man that glares at us because his dogs have a barking problem have been nice to us. We met another man this morning that talked to us for a long time. We got bored with him since we were on a mission to walk before the rain returned.  Mama mentioned how much we like the cool weather and he said it was hot.  Dad said someone said to the same thing to him yesterday.  Hot?  Seriously, it is in the 70's and 80's.  I guess it depends on what you get used to.  It is 71 in the RV this morning.  We have the windows opened.  Mama had to close the front door though because someone below us has a fire going and the smoke gives her migraines.  Yes, we camp and Mama can't be around campfires.  LOL   It hasn't been an issue until we got here.

Mama wanted to mention that if you ever go to Washington DC, she recommends going to Ford's Theater. That is where Lincoln was shot. She was there several years ago and the man who gave the tour was really good. His talk was very vivid and Mama felt like she was really there when it all happened. She then went across the street where Lincoln was taken after he was shot and saw the bed that he died in. She has also been to Springfield, IL and toured all the Lincoln things there. She also recommends seeing the Holocaust Museum. It is very sad to see, but should be so that we don't forget what happened.  Washington DC has so much to see and do.  We definitely didn't have enough time there.

Here's a view coming into our campground.

Another view of the road in the campground.
Some of the campers in the main camping area. They are not in the woods like us.
There is a national park near us, Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It is only 10 miles from us. We visited there on Sunday.  We only saw a small part of it.  We hope to go back and do some hiking.

Creek in park
Saturday night, the folks ate at Rocknes.  It is an upbeat, fun type of restaurant.  Mama ordered a Mini Max Hamburger.  Basically, it looks like McDonald's Big Mac, but comes with a steak knife in it to hold it together.  It has a secret sauce on it.   It is bigger than a Big Mac.  Mama said it was good.  Guess what?  She was so excited about eating it that she forgot to take a photo.  She said she will have to go back and eat there again so she can take a photo.  Dad had a cheeseburger.  He liked it too.

Rockne's Pub on Urbanspoon
Mama make a Hawaiian Pizza last night, but once again forgot to take photos.  We are going to have to tape the camera to her, I think.   She said the pizza was good.  It had BBQ sauce, bacon bits, ham, pineapple and cheese.

Weather Is Great In Ohio!

We have our windows and door open today!  The high  is expected to be 79.  The low tonight will be around 59. We may need to turn the heat on.  LOL  The hottest day this week will be 84 according to the weather people.
I told you we were in the woods!
Mama put our Greyhound flag out and also put the tablecloth on the picnic table. She said it makes it look more homey.

That tree with the ribbon is the tree that gave us so much trouble getting int our site.

I'm just chilling with the door open today.
We have our hummingbird feeder out, but so far no visitors.  Mama thought about getting some bird feeders but the raccoons would probably raid them.  She still may do it to give her something to worry about.

The only real downside to our site is that it is really far from the laundry room.  It is too far to walk and even if Mama got the cart that she wants for the laundry, it will be hard to push along the gravel road. She will have to do it at night when she has a car. She is concerned that the machines will be all tied up, so she may just go to town to do it.  They only have the laundry room open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. here.

We didn't have storms here after all.  We were walking with Mama yesterday and she felt a drop of rain and told us we needed to head back.  We wanted to sniff more and within a minute, we were under a big downpour. We were drenched!  Mama looked really funny with here hair so wet. She said "I was having a good hair day, too!"  She doesn't have many good hair days these days, so it was pretty sad.

Grandma sent us a photo to show us that a tree in our yard at home was hit by a storm on Saturday night.  Poor tree!  Grandpa is going to cut the limb out for us.  I bet the tree is going to look pretty bare when the limb is removed.
A tree at our house.  Our grass looks pretty dead.  They are having a drought there.
Grandma and Grandpa are coming to visit us here in Ohio!  Mama said that she and Daddy are checking out all the restaurants so that they know where to take them. Both places they ate this weekend were good.  Mama will tell you more about the restaurants later.

The beach at the campground. No dogs allowed!

Me waiting for Dad to get us checked in.

Fire engine rides take place on Saturday nights.

Another view of the lake.

This is the fishing lake.

Scout walking by the lake this morning.  She is not sure about Ohio yet.  She hasn't wanted to walk much here.

Another view of the fishing lake.
The park is nice and most sites are not wooded like ours.  We really like being in the shade although it is so shaded that it is dark inside the motor home.  Scout says it is great for sleeping.

There is a fenced area here for it. It has agility stuff in it though, so it's not good for running.  Mama says she might try to get us to try out the agility equipment. She can try, but we are not interested.

We will tell you more about DC tomorrow. We are so behind on our blogging.
